Road Tax & Registration

100% motor vehicle tax exemption for EVs, recently extended by two years and now valid January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027. Covers both transport and non-transport category EVs under the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1974.

Purchase Subsidy

Rs 10,000 per kWh of battery capacity, capped at Rs 1.5 lakh per vehicle, applied directly at the point of purchase by authorized dealers.

Other Incentives

  • SGST reimbursement on EVs manufactured and sold within Tamil Nadu, through 2030 (manufacturer-side incentive).
  • Capital subsidies of roughly 15-20% for EV and battery manufacturing units, plus land cost subsidies and stamp duty exemptions (manufacturer/industrial incentives, not buyer-facing).

Policy Watch

Important: Tamil Nadu's government has directed its transport commissioner to study the potential impact of introducing road tax on EVs and to review how other states (including Karnataka's 2026 tax change) have handled this. The current 100% exemption could be reassessed before its scheduled Dec 2027 expiry — don't assume it's permanent.

Always confirm current figures with your dealer or the Tamil Nadu Transport Department before purchase — state EV policies change frequently.
