Ask any electric car shopper in India what worries them most and the answer is rarely range or charging anymore. It is the battery: what happens to it after five years, what it costs to replace, and whether the warranty on the showroom brochure actually covers that. The good news is that Indian EV brands have quietly moved from the old 8-year standard to genuine lifetime cover on several models. The fine print, however, varies enough between Tata, Mahindra, MG, Hyundai and Kia that two buyers of similarly priced cars can end up with very different levels of protection. Here is what every major brand actually promises, in plain terms.
The old standard, and what “lifetime” really means
For years, 8 years or 1,60,000 km, whichever comes first, was the default high-voltage battery warranty across the Indian EV industry, and it remains the baseline that Tata, Hyundai and BYD apply to most of their range. MG covers the ZS EV for 8 years or 1,50,000 km and the smaller Comet for 8 years or 1,20,000 km.
Over the last two years several manufacturers have gone further and started advertising “lifetime” battery warranties on flagship models. In Indian usage this does not mean forever. It is standardised, in practice, as 15 years from the date of first registration with unlimited kilometres, subject to a state-of-health floor of around 70 per cent, below which the pack qualifies for replacement or repair under warranty. Crucially, every lifetime warranty in the market today is restricted to the first private owner on a non-commercial registration; sell the car and the cover typically reverts to the standard 8-year/1.6 lakh km term from the original delivery date.

Kia’s move on the Syros EV, which we covered in our report on Kia India’s EV strategy, is notable because it applies lifetime cover to an NMC chemistry pack, whereas Tata and MG’s lifetime terms have generally been on LFP packs that degrade more slowly to begin with. Mahindra’s 10-year, 2 lakh km term on the BE 6 and XEV 9e sits between the two approaches: longer than the old standard but with a defined end date rather than open-ended coverage, which we detailed in our Mahindra battery-as-a-service explainer.
What actually degrades a battery, and by how much
Real-world telemetry from thousands of EVs globally shows an average capacity loss of about 2.3 per cent a year, which projects to roughly 82 per cent of original capacity after eight years. Indian conditions are broadly similar, with typical degradation of 2 to 3 per cent a year, though heat is the biggest accelerant: a car that spends most of its life parked in direct sun in Delhi or Nagpur will degrade faster than one garaged in Bengaluru. A Tata Nexon EV that delivered 312 km of real-world range when new would, on this trajectory, deliver roughly 235 to 245 km after eight years of typical use — still comfortably above what most owners need for daily driving, and still within the warranty’s 70 per cent state-of-health floor.
The practical takeaway is that battery failure inside the warranty period is rare; gradual range reduction, not sudden failure, is what owners actually experience, and it happens slowly enough that most first owners will trade in the car before it becomes noticeable.
What voids the warranty
Every manufacturer’s terms exclude damage from accidents, unauthorised repairs, using non-approved charging equipment, and modifications to the battery management system. Two exclusions catch out more owners than expected: fitting non-OEM fast chargers or third-party wallboxes not on the approved list, and continuous heavy use of DC fast charging beyond the manufacturer’s recommended frequency, which several brands now flag as a factor that can affect the pack faster than home AC charging. Commercial registration, such as using a private car for ride-hailing, also voids the extended lifetime terms on every brand above and drops the car to the standard 8-year cover.
What to check before you buy
- Ask whether the specific variant, not just the model, carries the lifetime term. On the Nexon EV, only the 45 kWh long-range pack gets lifetime cover; the 30 kWh version does not.
- Confirm the state-of-health floor. A 70 per cent floor means the warranty triggers only once the pack has lost 30 per cent of capacity, not at the first sign of reduced range.
- If buying used, price in the reversion. A five-year-old Curvv EV with an original lifetime warranty is, in the hands of a second owner, back to whatever remains of the standard 8-year/1.6 lakh km term.
- Use only OEM-approved chargers at home and avoid daily DC fast charging if you want to protect both real-world range and warranty standing.
