If you are asking which electric scooter in India uses an LFP battery, the honest answer as of 15 September 2026 is: a small but suddenly growing list. Ola’s new S1 Z range runs on the company’s own 46-series lithium iron phosphate Bharat Cell. Ather quietly moved its entry Rizta packs to LFP in July 2026. Ampere has built its pitch around LFP for years. On the other side, TVS states in its own FAQ that the iQube uses NMC, and the Bajaj Chetak 3501 runs 21700 NMC cells. That split matters more in India than almost anywhere else, because the two chemistries behave very differently in 45-degree heat – and because your warranty is the one place the difference shows up in writing.

How we worked this out

Cell chemistry is not something most Indian manufacturers put on the spec sheet, so each entry below is tied to a named source rather than to an aggregator listing. Ola’s LFP claim and cell format come from Autocar Professional’s report on the S1 Z launch of 28 August 2026. Ather’s switch comes from BikeDekho’s 17 July 2026 report on the revised packs. The TVS iQube’s NMC chemistry is taken from TVS Motor’s own iQube FAQ page. The Bajaj Chetak 3501’s 21700 NMC cells and Ampere’s LFP positioning both come from BikeWale. All figures were checked on 15 September 2026. Where a manufacturer does not publish chemistry, we say so rather than guessing – and that is a meaningful part of the picture.

One important caveat on the Ola entry: the S1 Z was launched on 28 August 2026 at Rs 79,999 for the 3.1 kWh version and Rs 99,999 for the 5.1 kWh, but deliveries were slated to begin only in December 2026. Why LFP is spreading in India specifically

Autocar Professional’s account of Ola’s decision is unusually direct about the reasoning: LFP was chosen because it offers greater thermal stability and longer cycle life than NMC, and is less prone to thermal runaway – a live concern in a market that has had well-publicised two-wheeler fire incidents. The second driver is cost. The same report notes that the battery is typically the single largest component in the price of an electric vehicle, often 35 to 45 per cent of the total, which is why building LFP cells in-house at a Tamil Nadu gigafactory is as much a pricing strategy as a safety one.

The trade-off is energy density. As BikeWale’s comparison puts it, NMC stores more energy in less space and less weight, and Ather’s own position has been that LFP lacks the energy density required for a genuinely high-performance scooter. That is exactly what Ather’s July 2026 move shows in practice: it put LFP into the entry Rizta packs, not into the 450X.

The detail worth noticing in Ather’s switch

When Ather changed chemistry it also changed pack sizes, and the numbers are instructive. The Rizta’s smaller pack went from 2.9 kWh NMC to 2.7 kWh LFP – roughly 7 per cent less energy on board – while the claimed IDC range stayed at 123 km. The larger pack went from 3.7 kWh to 3.5 kWh NMC, about 5 per cent less energy, while the claimed range went up from 159 km to 161 km. In other words, the marketing range number moved independently of the energy in the battery. The place the difference is legally binding: warranty

Chemistry claims are marketing until someone puts a number in a warranty document. Here the gap is visible. TVS’s own FAQ says the iQube carries a three-year warranty covering battery, controller, charger and motor, limited to 30,000 km on the 2.3 kWh variant and 50,000 km on the others. Ampere, selling LFP, advertises five years or 75,000 km on the battery. Ola’s S1 Z ships with a standard three-year or 40,000 km warranty, with an extension option quoted up to eight years or 70,000 km.

Run that as a cost-per-covered-kilometre exercise on a hypothetical Rs 30,000 pack, using only the warranted distances:

  • Covered to 50,000 km (TVS iQube, larger packs): the manufacturer is standing behind roughly Rs 0.60 per km of pack cost.
  • Covered to 75,000 km (Ampere LFP): roughly Rs 0.40 per km.
  • Covered to 40,000 km standard (Ola S1 Z): roughly Rs 0.75 per km, falling to about Rs 0.43 per km if you take the 70,000 km extension.

That is a 50 to 85 per cent swing in how much distance the manufacturer is willing to guarantee, and it tracks chemistry more closely than it tracks brand prestige. What this should change about your shortlist

If you live in a city that spends March to June above 40 degrees, park in the open, and charge daily at home, thermal stability is worth paying attention to, and an LFP pack with a long warranty is a defensible choice. If your priority is a light, fast scooter and you cover long distances per charge, NMC is still where the energy density is, and every high-performance model in the table reflects that.

What should not drive the decision is a chemistry acronym on its own. A well-managed NMC pack with active thermal management and a strong warranty will outlast a badly managed LFP one. Ask the dealer three things instead: the warranted years and kilometres, whether the warranty transfers on resale, and what the state-of-health threshold for a claim is. Who this is for, and its limits

This is for buyers comparing two or three scooters and trying to work out whether an LFP claim is worth anything. It is not a safety ranking: no chemistry makes a scooter fireproof, and cell chemistry is only one input alongside pack design, the battery management system and build quality, which is what AIS-156 certification actually tests.

The limitation to be honest about: several brands, including some large ones, do not publish cell chemistry at all, and we have not listed a chemistry for any model where we could not point to a named source. If your shortlisted model is not in the table, that is usually because the manufacturer has not said. Ask them in writing before you buy, particularly if you plan to keep the scooter past the warranty period. Specifications also change mid-year without a launch event – Ather’s chemistry switch is proof of that – so confirm the pack in the scooter you are actually being sold.
