How much does it cost to replace an electric car battery in India? The honest answer is that no Indian carmaker publishes a price, the one figure most people have heard, Rs 7 lakh for a Tata Nexon EV, came from a single dealer conversation, and almost every number you will find online is an estimate. What can be said with confidence is this: a full pack replacement on a mainstream Indian EV, if you ever paid for it, would cost somewhere between Rs 3.5 lakh and Rs 9 lakh depending on the car, the underlying cell cost of that pack is roughly half of the quoted figure, and the overwhelming majority of owners will never pay it because the pack is under warranty for 8 years or, on several models, for the life of the car. This guide separates what is verified from what is estimated, model by model, and works out what a replacement should cost from first principles.

How we worked this out

We checked three kinds of source on 10 September 2026: the documented owner case that produced the Rs 7 lakh figure, as reported by Rushlane and CarToq; the model-wise estimates published by aftermarket and EV-service sites, which we treat as indicative rather than confirmed; and BloombergNEF’s December 2025 battery price survey, which gives the cell and pack cost that any replacement price must be built on. Warranty terms are taken from manufacturer documentation as compiled in our own EV battery warranty comparison. Where a figure is an estimate we say so in the table.

The one verified number: the Rs 7 lakh Nexon EV quote

The figure that anchors every Indian conversation about battery replacement comes from a Nexon EV owner in Karnataka who posted in an owners’ group after his two-year-old car, with more than 68,000 km on it, began stalling when the charge fell to about 15 per cent. The service centre diagnosed a pack fault and, when asked, said a replacement would cost about Rs 7 lakh. The pack was replaced free under the 8-year warranty. Tata Motors did not confirm the figure then and has not published a replacement price since. That is the entire evidentiary basis for the Rs 7 lakh number: one verbal quote, on the older 30.2 kWh pack, for a car that paid nothing.

Two things stand out. The estimates scale roughly with pack size, at Rs 12,000 to Rs 18,000 per kWh, which is the range you would expect for an imported pack with duty, GST and dealer margin on top. And the models with the largest packs, which would cost most to replace, are precisely the ones with the longest warranties.

What a battery actually costs to make

BloombergNEF’s annual survey, published in December 2025, put the global average lithium-ion pack price at $108 per kWh, down 8 per cent in a year. Lithium iron phosphate packs, the chemistry in every Tata, Mahindra, MG, Maruti and BYD car sold in India, averaged $81 per kWh, and the cheapest LFP cells were observed at $36 per kWh. BNEF expects a further 3 per cent fall in 2026, to just under $105 for the average pack.

The gap between the two columns is not profiteering; it is the cost of getting a pack from a factory in China into a car in Nagpur. Import duty on battery packs, 18 per cent GST on a replacement battery sold separately, which we explained in our guide to GST on electric vehicles, freight, the dealer’s margin, the battery management system and a day of labour all sit between the two. A rule of thumb that fits the data: an out-of-warranty replacement in India costs roughly twice the BNEF pack price for that chemistry. On that basis a 45 kWh LFP pack should cost about Rs 6.5 lakh today and, if BNEF’s trend holds, closer to Rs 5.5 lakh by 2028.

Why almost nobody pays it

Three reasons, in order of importance.

  1. The warranty outlasts the failure window. Every EV sold in India carries at least 8 years or 1.5 to 1.6 lakh km of battery cover to a 70 per cent state-of-health floor. Tata’s Nexon EV 45, Curvv EV and Harrier EV, MG’s Windsor and Kia’s Syros EV go further, with lifetime cover, defined as 15 years and unlimited kilometres for the first private owner. Mahindra’s BE 6 and XEV 9e carry 10 years or 2 lakh km. Pack failures cluster in the first three years, when a defective cell or module shows up, and in the final years of a pack’s life, well beyond a decade. Both fall inside the warranty on most cars.
  2. Degradation is slow. Our review of real-world battery degradation in India found typical capacity loss of 2 to 3 per cent a year, which leaves a pack above 75 per cent after eight years. LFP packs, as explained in our LFP versus NMC guide, are rated for 2,500 to 4,000 cycles, which at 300 km a cycle is more kilometres than most cars are ever driven.
  3. Repairs are increasingly at module level. A pack is built from modules, and a fault in one cell can often be fixed by replacing that module rather than the pack. Manufacturers do not publish module prices and rarely offer module repair outside warranty, but the practice is spreading in authorised workshops, and third-party EV repairers in Bengaluru, Pune and Delhi now advertise it.

When you might actually pay

  • Second owner of a lifetime-warranty car. Lifetime cover is for the first private owner only; on resale it reverts to the standard 8-year term from the original delivery date. A 2026 Curvv EV bought used in 2033 has one year of cover left, not a lifetime.
  • Accident damage. A pack damaged in a collision is an insurance claim, not a warranty claim. Standard own-damage policies cover it, but only if the battery is part of the insured declared value; our EV loans and insurance guide explains which add-ons matter.
  • Commercial registration. Fleet cars, which is where the Tigor EV quotes come from, typically carry shorter warranties and rack up kilometres fast enough to exhaust them.
  • Warranty voided. Servicing outside the network, opening the pack, or in some brands’ terms, repeated use of non-certified chargers can void cover. Keep the service record.

Who this is for, and who should ignore it

This guide is for buyers weighing an EV against a petrol car and for used-EV shoppers trying to price battery risk. If you are the first owner of a Tata, MG or Kia with lifetime cover and you plan to keep the car, the replacement cost is close to irrelevant to you. If you are buying a used EV with a standard 8-year warranty and three or more years already used, treat the estimated replacement figure above as a real, if unlikely, liability, and check the pack’s state of health before you pay; India has no mandatory disclosure standard yet, as we set out in our report on the missing battery-health rule.
