JLR has opened order books in India for the production-spec Range Rover Electric, and the entry ticket alone says a lot about where this car sits: a Rs 10 lakh booking token, a fully imported CBU from Solihull in the UK, and an expected sticker of roughly Rs 3.5 to 3.7 crore ex-showroom. That makes it the most expensive battery-electric SUV ever offered for sale in India, and the first full-size luxury flagship to arrive with an 800-volt architecture and 350 kW DC charging. Bookings opened on 2 September 2026. Here is what is actually being sold, what the numbers mean in Indian conditions, and how it compares with the electric cars Indian luxury buyers are already choosing.

What JLR has opened bookings for

JLR India is taking reservations for five configurations at launch. The standard-wheelbase car comes in Autobiography trim and as a First Edition. The long-wheelbase body is offered in the SV, SV Ultra and SV Black grades from JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations division. The First Edition can be specified in three launch colours: Belgravia Green, Santorini Black and Varesine Blue.

Final India pricing and delivery timelines have not been announced. JLR says both will be confirmed closer to launch. Autocar India’s estimate is a Rs 3.5 to 3.7 crore ex-showroom band, and because the car is built in Solihull and imported whole, it does not qualify for the reduced tariffs under the India-UK trade agreement, which apply only to a capped quota of vehicles and specific categories.

The powertrain: 118.5 kWh, two motors, 850 Nm

The battery is a 118.5 kWh lithium-ion pack made up of 344 prismatic cells, arranged in a twin-layer structure that JLR designed and assembles in-house. It feeds two JLR-developed electric drive units, one per axle, each rated at 260 kW. Combined system output is 405 kW, which JLR rounds to 550 PS, with 850 Nm of torque. That torque figure is the highest of any Range Rover ever built, more than the twin-turbo V8 petrol.

JLR has kept its off-road credentials front and centre. The 900 mm wading depth matches the combustion Range Rover, the Integrated Traction Management system now uses the motors themselves rather than the brakes for slip control, and the company says torque can be adjusted within 50 milliseconds, which is why it claims the electric model can climb 45-degree gradients in single-pedal mode. Twin-valve active dampers, dual-chamber air springs and rear-axle steering are all carried over.

Charging in India: what 350 kW actually gets you

The headline “22 minutes from 10 to 80 per cent” depends on a 350 kW charger, and India has very few of those. As we detailed in our report on how 73 per cent of India’s public chargers are rated under 30 kW, the national network is dominated by slow AC units, and the small population of 120 kW to 240 kW DC units is concentrated on a handful of highway corridors and metro fuel stations. On a typical 60 kW public charger, a 118.5 kWh pack would take well over an hour to move from 10 to 80 per cent.

The indicative times above are simple energy-divided-by-power estimates and ignore charging curves, so real figures will be longer on DC. The practical reading is that a Range Rover Electric in India will be charged at home overnight for almost all use, with a 22 kW three-phase wallbox making the most sense for this battery size. How it compares with what luxury EV buyers are already buying

The Range Rover Electric does not really have a direct rival in India at Rs 3.5 crore. The nearest points of reference are the cars that already sell in the premium electric space, and the gap is enormous on price if not on range.

Where JLR is playing a different game is the Tata connection. JLR is owned by Tata Motors, and the Range Rover Electric’s battery know-how sits in the same group that is building the Agratas battery gigafactory at Sanand. The group is also ramping up a new plant at Ranipet in Tamil Nadu, where CKD assembly of JLR models began with the Range Rover Evoque in early 2026. There is no confirmation that the electric Range Rover will ever be assembled locally, and JLR has been reported to have paused earlier plans to build EVs at Ranipet, so for now Indian buyers should assume this remains a full import with full import duty.

Who this car is for

At an expected Rs 3.5 crore plus, the Range Rover Electric is not an efficiency purchase. The buyers JLR is targeting already own a Range Rover, want the same cabin and the same badge, and have a home where a three-phase wallbox is trivial to install. For that owner the numbers work in a way they would not for a mass-market buyer: the car will rarely see a public charger, 535 km of real-world range covers any plausible day of driving, and the torque delivery is a genuine step up from the V8.

The market context matters too. Tata continues to dominate Indian EV volumes, as our August 2026 electric car sales report showed, but the top end of the market has been growing on a different track, with Tesla, BMW and Mercedes-Benz all expanding their electric line-ups this year. The Range Rover Electric extends that ceiling by more than a crore, and it will be a useful test of how deep demand really is above Rs 2 crore.

  • Final India pricing. JLR has only given a token amount. The Rs 3.5 to 3.7 crore figure is an estimate and will depend on the trims and options selected.
  • Delivery timeline. Not confirmed. Production is at Solihull and India allocations will follow global markets.
  • Charging support. Whether JLR India bundles a 22 kW home wallbox with installation, as some rivals do at this price.
  • Local assembly. Any move to add the electric Range Rover to Ranipet CKD would change the price dramatically, but nothing has been announced.
